IIT Admission Through JoSAA — What You Need to Know
1. JEE Advanced CRL Rank Determines IIT Seats
Your JEE Advanced Common Rank List (CRL) rank is used for IIT seat allocation in JoSAA. There are no home state quotas for IITs — all seats are All India (AI) quota, meaning all candidates compete equally.
2. Subject-wise Minimum Marks Required
To be eligible for IIT seat allocation, you must clear BOTH aggregate cutoff AND subject-wise minimum marks cutoff in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics individually. Failing even one subject minimum disqualifies you from seat allocation despite a good total score.
3. Old IITs vs New IITs
The 5 original IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur) have much lower closing ranks (more competitive). New IITs (Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Ropar, Mandi, etc.) have significantly higher closing ranks (more accessible). If your rank allows, prioritize old IIT programs before new IITs with popular branches.
