JoSAA 2026 College Prediction — Complete Guide

How JoSAA Seat Allocation Works

JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) conducts a centralized seat allocation process for 116 institutes including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Allocation happens in 6 rounds. In each round, you're allocated a seat based on your rank, category, preferences, and seat availability. You can then accept, reject, or float to the next round hoping for a better option.

AI vs HS vs OS Quota Explained

All India (AI) quota applies to all candidates from any state. Home State (HS) quota reserves ~50% seats in NITs for state residents — giving a significant rank advantage. Other State (OS) quota fills the remaining NIT seats. For IITs and IIITs, only AI quota applies. If you're from the home state of an NIT, your HS cutoff rank is typically 25–40% lower than OS cutoff, giving you a huge advantage.

Understanding Probability Bands

Safe means your rank is well below the historical closing rank — you have a very high chance of getting that seat. Moderate means your rank is close to the closing rank — you may get it, but seat availability fluctuates year to year. Reach means the closing rank is slightly above yours — possible only in favorable years. For high-stakes decisions, focus primarily on Safe colleges.
