JEE Advanced Rank Calculation — Everything You Need to Know

JEE Advanced Marking Scheme 2026

JEE Advanced has 3 types of questions: Single Correct (3 marks, -1 for wrong), Multiple Correct (4 marks, partial marking, no negative), and Numerical Value (4 marks, no negative). Max marks per paper is typically 180. Total max = 360 marks. Each paper has equal weightage for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Subject-wise Minimum Marks Cutoff

To qualify for IIT seat allocation, you must score above the subject-wise minimum cutoff in EACH subject AND in aggregate. The cutoffs vary by category. Historically, GEN category subject cutoff is ~10–12% of max subject marks. Failing any individual subject cutoff disqualifies you from seat allocation regardless of total marks.

Zone Ranks & CRL Rank

JEE Advanced generates multiple rank lists: CRL (Common Rank List — all categories), OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, and PwD ranks. Zone ranks (IIT Zone-wise) are also generated. Seat allocation in JoSAA uses your CRL rank for OPEN seats and respective category rank for reserved seats. The rank applies across all 23 IITs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum marks needed for IIT seat in 2026?+

Typically, a total score of 100–120/360 qualifies you for IIT seats in GEN category (varies year to year). Subject-wise, you need to score above the cutoff in each of PHY, CHEM, and MATH individually. For IIT Bombay CS, you need ~250+ marks typically.

How are marks calculated with partial marking in JEE Advanced?+

For multiple correct questions: if ALL correct options are marked, full 4 marks. If partial correct (no wrong), marks = 4 × (correct marked / total correct options). For single correct: +3, -1. For numerical: +4, no negative. Calculate carefully before entering marks.

What if I pass subject-wise cutoff but miss aggregate cutoff?+

Both conditions must be satisfied simultaneously. Missing either the aggregate cutoff OR any individual subject-wise cutoff will exclude you from seat allocation. A rank is NOT generated in that case.
