Calculation Formula & Methodology

Percentile = (100 × N_below) / N_total Rank ≈ N_total × (100 − Percentile) / 100

Predictions are based on 5-year NTA & JoSAA historical data (2020–2025) using polynomial regression and statistical interpolation. All cutoff data sourced from official JoSAA seat allocation records.

Understanding JEE Main Rank Prediction

How NTA Calculates Your Rank

NTA uses a multi-session normalization method to calculate your percentile score. Since JEE Main is conducted in multiple sessions, raw marks cannot be directly compared. NTA converts raw scores to percentile — your score relative to ALL students in your session. The formula is: Percentile = (100 × number of students scoring ≤ your score) / total students in session. The best percentile across all sessions you appear in is considered for final rank generation.

Session Normalization & Its Impact

If Session 1 has an easier paper, topping students score higher marks, resulting in a compressed rank range at the top. NTA's normalization ensures a student scoring 250/300 in a tough session gets the same percentile as a student scoring 260/300 in an easier session. This is why two students with the same raw marks but in different sessions can have different ranks.

Our Prediction Methodology

Our rank predictor uses 5 years of published NTA result data (2020–2024). We fit a rank-score curve using cubic polynomial regression, separately analyzing Category-wise rank data (GEN, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS). The predicted rank includes a ±15% confidence interval to account for year-to-year difficulty variations. Our model has been validated against actual JEE Main 2024 results with 92%+ accuracy within the ±20% rank band.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this rank predictor accurate for JEE Main 2026?+

Our predictor uses 5 years of NTA result data (2020-2024) with polynomial regression. It achieves 92%+ accuracy within a ±20% rank band. However, year-to-year difficulty variations can cause slight deviations. We recommend treating the result as a ±15% confidence range around the predicted rank.

Should I use Session 1 or Session 2 result for prediction?+

NTA considers your best percentile across all sessions. Enter your best score from any session. If you appear in both sessions, use the session where you scored higher marks for the most optimistic (but realistic) prediction.

Does negative marking affect the rank prediction?+

Yes. Enter your actual raw score after applying negative marking (-1 for each wrong MCQ, +4 for correct). Numerical Value Questions (NVQs) carry no negative marking. Ensure you enter your total calculated raw score, not the number of correct answers.

What is the difference between CRL and category rank?+

CRL (Common Rank List) is your overall rank among all candidates. Category rank is your rank within your category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS). For seat allocation, both ranks matter — CRL is used for OPEN category seats, and category rank for reserved seats. JoSAA may allocate you a seat through either pathway.
